Pakistan Postcode Guide: 5-Digit Postal Codes Explained
Pakistan uses 5-digit postcodes to help sort and deliver mail. This guide explains what a postcode is, why the right one matters and how it is different from a tracking number.
What Is a Pakistan Post Postcode?
A postcode (sometimes called a postal code or ZIP code) is a number linked to a delivery area and its post office. Pakistan Post uses postcodes to help send mail to the right place, especially where different towns have similar names.
How a 5-Digit Postcode Works
Every Pakistani postcode has five digits. In general, the digits narrow down the area step by step:
Why the Right Postcode Matters
Many places in Pakistan have the same or similar names. A missing or wrong postcode can cause problems:
A wrong postcode can send mail to the wrong area first, so it takes longer to reach you.
The right postcode helps your item reach the post office that delivers to your street.
For online orders and UMS cash on delivery parcels, a correct postcode helps the booking go through smoothly.
Do Not Mix Up Postcodes and Tracking Numbers
People sometimes confuse a 5-digit postcode with a tracking number. They do very different jobs:
- A fixed number for an area and its post office.
- Shared by everyone in that delivery area.
- Written on envelopes to help direct the mail.
- Cannot be used to track an item online.
- A unique barcode number printed on your booking receipt.
- Belongs to just one registered letter or parcel.
- Entered on the Track & Trace website to see where your item is.
- Different for every item you send.

How to Write an Address Correctly
To help postal staff and postmen deliver your mail, write the address clearly in the bottom-right part of the envelope, in this order:
Write the address in this order:
Receiver’s full name or organisation
House, plot or building number, and street or sector
Area or town (and the local post office, if you know it)
City and 5-digit postcode
Country (needed for mail going abroad)
Always write your own full address and postcode on the back or in the top-left corner. If the receiver has moved or cannot be found, the post office can use it to send the item back to you.
What to Do If You Do Not Know the Postcode
If you are not sure of the postcode for an address, try these steps:
- Ask at the counter: Post office staff can help you find the right postcode for an area.
- Write the city and area clearly: If you do not know the postcode, write the city and area name clearly. Do not guess a number.
- Be careful with unofficial postcode websites: Check postcodes against Pakistan Post’s own information where you can.
